Ingredients you will need
- Puff pastry dough – As I mentioned previously, I use a store-bought puff pastry sheet (rectangular shape) to make this puff pastry cinnamon twists recipe. You can follow my Rough puff pastry recipe to make homemade puff pastry if you like.
- Unsalted butter – You will need to melt it to be able to apply it on top of the pastry dough without tearing the dough apart.
- Sugar – I use a fifty-fifty mix of white and brown sugar for the topping, but you can use only white or brown sugar instead.
- Ground cinnamon – You can adjust the amount to your liking.
Cooking tips
Thaw the puff pastry sheet slightly before unrolling it for easier handling and to prevent potential cracking. Check for thawing instructions on the package of the dough you buy.
Twist the dough tight. If you twist your strips only once or twice, they may unroll during baking. Consider twisting them three or more times.
Don’t overbake your cinnamon puff pastry twists. Keep a close eye on them, as baking times can vary. Once you don’t see any wet spots on your twists and they look golden brown, take them out of the oven.
How to make puff pastry cinnamon twists
- Preheat oven to 390F (200C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a small bowl, combine the white sugar, brown sugar, and ground cinnamon. Set aside.
- Unroll the puff pastry dough sheet, sprinkle it on top with some flour, and roll gently with a rolling pin to flatten the dough and seal all possible cracks.
- Cut in half lengthwise using a long sharp knife or a pizza cutter. Then, cut into 1” wide strips.
- Brush the melted butter over the puff pastry strips.
- Sprinkle cinnamon sugar mixture on top and gently press with your hands to make it stick better.
- Twist each strip and place it onto the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 13-15 minutes or until puffy and golden brown. Bake in batches if needed.
- Remove from the oven and let the twists cool down until warm to the touch before serving.
Possible variations
Use other spices – Experiment with different spices to customize the flavor of your cinnamon twists. Consider options like nutmeg, cardamom, or a hint of ginger for a unique twist on the classic recipe.
Dust with powdered sugar – If you think that your puff pastry sugar sticks are not sweet enough, add a sweet finishing touch by dusting them with powdered sugar.
Drizzle sugar icing on top – To make the icing, mix powdered sugar with a small amount of milk or water until you achieve a smooth consistency. Drizzle over the twists for an extra layer of sweetness.
Tempered chocolate – Just like I did with these Matcha cookies and my Strawberry shortbread cookies, you can temper the chocolate and drizzle on top of completely cooled cinnamon sugar puff pastry sticks. Tempered chocolate won’t melt at room temperature, so no worry about storing them like that.
FAQ
